Find the bluffer. Trust no one.
Word Imposter is a free, no-install, browser-based multiplayer social deduction word game. Everyone in the match receives a secret word — except the Imposter, who sees nothing and must bluff their way through one-word clue rounds, open discussion, and an elimination vote. Give a clue that proves you know the word without making it so obvious the Imposter can guess it. Then discuss, accuse, and vote someone out. Find the Imposter before they survive to the final two — or watch them guess the secret word and steal the win.
Why it works
Social Deduction
The Imposter has no word and must bluff. Civilians must give clues that prove knowledge without giving too much away. Every round is a balancing act of trust and suspicion.
4–10 Players
Scales from a tight four-player duel to a chaotic ten-player party. Larger games add a second Imposter at 8+ players — now you can't trust anyone.
Optional Undercover
The Undercover sees a similar-but-different word. They're on the Civilian team but their slightly-off clues raise suspicion. An extra layer of deduction for groups that want it.
Quick Rounds
Each round takes minutes. Play one or chain multiple rounds in a single match. The leaderboard tracks total wins across all your matches.
How a round plays out
Roles
- Civilian — sees the secret word. Goal: find and vote out the Imposter without giving the word away.
- Imposter — sees nothing (only the category). Must bluff clues, survive votes, and can attempt a last guess at the word if caught. 1 Imposter for 4–7 players, 2 for 8–10.
- Undercover — optional role, toggled by the host. Sees a similar-but-different word. Wins and loses with the Civilians, but their slightly-off clues can sow confusion.
Win conditions
- Civilians win — all Imposters voted out and they fail their last guess at the secret word.
- Imposter wins — survives until only 2 players remain, or correctly guesses the secret word after being eliminated.
Word database
400+ word pairs across 20 categories. Each round draws from a random category — the category name is shown to all players as a hint. The Civilian word and the Undercover word (when that role is active) are always related but distinct — close enough to create genuine confusion, different enough that attentive players can spot the gap.
Match setup
- Host creates a match and gets an 8-character invite code to share with friends.
- Players join via the invite code. The match starts when all expected seats are filled.
- The host can toggle the Undercover role on or off before starting.
- The host can configure the discussion timer duration.
- Multiple rounds can be played in a single match session.
Leaderboard
Ranked by total wins (the score column in the runs table), with tiebreak by win rate. Every completed match logs a run per player with their win/loss outcome. The leaderboard reflects cumulative performance across all matches — not just one good game.
Privacy and signup
Friend matches need a registered handle so invites can route to a stable user id. There are no tracking pixels, no analytics SDK, no third-party scripts, and no payment processor anywhere on the site — the whole stack is one origin and one signed session cookie.
Frequently asked
Is it really free?
Yes. No ads, no in-app purchases, no payment processor. Hosted on a small VPS as a hobby project.
How many players do I need?
Minimum 4, maximum 10. The game is friend-match only — the host shares an invite code. Games with 8-10 players feature 2 Imposters instead of 1.
What is the Undercover role?
An optional role toggled by the host. The Undercover player receives a word similar to — but different from — the Civilians' word. They're on the Civilian team, but their clues will naturally be a bit off, which can lead to suspicion or protect the real Imposter.
Can the Imposter win after being voted out?
Yes. When an Imposter is eliminated, they get one Last Guess at the secret word. If they guess correctly, they win the round despite being caught.
Does it work on mobile?
Yes. The layout is mobile-first — all interactions are tap-friendly. iOS Safari, Chrome on Android, Firefox, and desktop browsers are all supported.
Is there an app?
No, and there won't be. Everything is a browser page. Add to your home screen if you want an icon.
